Douching has been promoted in the media by the makers of douches as a necessary part of feminine hygiene, but the truth is that vaginal douching has been linked to pelvic and vaginal infections in women. Rectal douching is also practiced by some men and women after anal intercourse, but this practice can lead to infection in the rectal area. The vagina and the rectum do not need our help to “cleanse” themselves. Their natural secretions are already able to do this adequately.

Douching in the vagina can disrupt the normal secretions and bacterial environment and promote yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis. A more serious consideration is that it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which in turn can lead to scarring, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility. Furthermore, the mucosal tissues that line the vagina and rectum are very delicate, and douching may tear the linings, allowing potentially harmful viruses and bacteria from a recent or subsequent sexual contact a better chance to take hold and cause infection. Douching before and after sex has also not been found to prevent infection after someone has been exposed to an STD. Therefore, for many reasons, douching before or after sex is not a good idea.
