The Progestogen IUD is relatively new and as with any new methods it broadens the choices for women who have particular needs.

What is a Progestogen IUD? The Progestogen IUD is a new type of IUD that contains the hormone progestogen. A hormone is a type of chemical that is normally produced in the body. Progestogen is a hormone that helps the woman’s reproductive system work properly. The Progestogen IUD is a small white plastic device about 3cm long, similar to the Copper IUD. It looks like a little T.

There is a cylinder around the stem of the IUD with progestogen in it. The cylinder is covered with a membrane that regulates the amount of progestogen released into the uterus. The Progestogen IUD also has a fine nylon suing attached to the end of the stem. When the IUD is in the uterus, the string comes out through the cervix into the far end of the vagina. If you feel right up inside your vagina with your finger, you can check that the string is there and know it is still in place.

Are there different types of Progestogen IUD? There is only one type of Progestogen IUD available in Australia at present. It is called the Mirena IUS. The IUS stands for intrauterine system.
