Never forget that your children will often turn out to be a mirror-image of you. This happens so often that I must mention it, and I will probably mention it many times again. The child subconsciously absorbs the attributes with which it comes into regular contact. If parental example is sloppy, greedy, selfish, unloving, cranky, always blaming the other person, overcritical, rude, immoral, then this is most likely the sort of person your child will develop into. Conversely, if the child sees love and affection, honesty, a high moral standard and happiness, as the general standard, this also will be the standard he will automatically adopt.

Of course, as humans are also influenced by many facets of their environment, these comments will not always prove to be true. Other factors* will interplay. But the foregoing principles are important. Use them to the best advantage you can, for as long as you can. It will pay handsome dividends.

I believe it is worth taking time to teach your child the value of setting goals for himself in life. A life without a goal is like a ship without a rudder. It will never reach its destination, for there is no destination to be reached, and no way of reaching it anyway.

To my way of thinking, a goal in life is one of the most important features. This may be applied to any facet of living. But start to inculcate the idea as soon as you can. This may be started in any child at a very young age.

Encouragement is always necessary. Help your children make plans, and get them into the way of setting targets for themselves, whether it be on the domestic level or in the academic sphere. Teach him to aim at passing exams, and to have goals in non-academic activities.
