The changes that take place in your body during puberty happen because your body is getting ready for a time in your life when you may decide to have a baby. Of course, just because you’re physically able to reproduce (that is, to make a baby) doesn’t mean you’re mature enough to become a parent yet. But your body is getting ready for the time when you may want to start a family of your own.

Because puberty is a time when the body is preparing itself for reproduction, topics like pregnancy and childbirth naturally come up in our classes. Since human beings reproduce by sexual intercourse, intercourse is another subject that we always spend a good deal of time talking about in class. When we start talking about reproduction and intercourse, the boys and girls always start asking questions about contraception (birth control), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs, also called venereal disease or VD) and other reproductive health matters. In fact, the young people in our classes have lots and lots of questions about all of these subjects. You may have many of the same questions, so in this chapter we’re going to talk about these things and try to answer your questions. Unfortunately, there just isn’t room in this book to cover these topics fully or answer all your questions. However, we’d like to say at least a bit about each of these subjects and to answer some of the most commonly asked questions. And at the end of the chapter we’ll suggest some ways in which you can go about finding answers to any other questions you may have.
