We must approach the experiments in the right attitude of mind. To condition ourselves about pain is something quite natural and sensible. There is no occasion at all for us to feel strange or awkward about it in any way. We just continue naturally and easily as we have in the relaxing exercises.

There are two important principles to which we must always adhere. We must always have ourselves absolutely relaxed and calm in our mind before we start. If for some reason we are unable to attain calm and relaxation, we do not go on with it, but wait awhile until the relaxation comes. And secondly, in order that our mind can adjust to it, our exposure to discomfort must be a very gradual process, so that at no time do we ever become disturbed by it.

The first steps can be lying on a hard surface such as the floor instead of on a couch, or sitting on a hard chair instead of an armchair.

Before we start on any experiment in discomfort, we always practise for a few moments under comfortable conditions so as first to develop the relaxed state of mind.

When we have mastered one uncomfortable situation, we gradually proceed to more uncomfortable situations, such as lying on a hard surface with pebbles under our back, or putting a clip on a fold of our skin to pinch it. The important thing is that we always maintain our relaxation during the experiment, and we proceed slowly so that we never really get disturbed by the discomfort.

If we should find that the discomfort is breaking through, as it were, so that it is beginning to trouble us, we must not just stop the experiment. Rather, we must relax more deeply, and the tendency for the discomfort to break into our consciousness will pass. Then, and only then, when we have got things quite under control again, do we stop the experiment.
