PIMPLES: TREATMENT
posted by admin in General healthIf your acne has recently appeared only after you began using a new cosmetic, you should discontinue its use and see if it clears up. If a new medication is the culprit, ask your doctor which medication you should switch to.
There are a number of other steps you can try to treat it yourself. Benzoyl peroxide is an over-the-counter medication that causes your skin to peel. When this happens, the skin around the pimples begins to flake and the plugs in the oil glands fall out.
Some midlife women find that their acne flare-ups coincide with the onset of their menstrual periods. If this is the case, you can help reduce the incidence of pimples by keeping your skin clean enough so that it is slightly dry—again, to encourage the skin to peel and reduce the number of pimples. You don’t have to worry that keeping your skin dry will cause it to wrinkle; if your skin is producing enough oil to make pimples, it has enough oil to keep it moist. But don’t let it become too dry; the oil gland will overreact and produce even more oil, and therefore more pimples.
If your acne is severe, see a dermatologist. She may prescribe the antibiotic tetracycline, which can clear up the acne and prevent scarring.
Look at the bright side: having pimples may make you feel like a kid again, except this time you don’t have to ask your parents what time you have to be home!
Tips and Precautions
Though you probably remember hearing as a teenager that your acne was caused by chocolate, greasy foods, oversleeping, or even masturbating, none of these things is true.
