TEETHING

posted by admin in General health

Teething has been blamed for causing crying, fevers and even convulsions.

There is no doubt that most children suffer some pain, salivate more and, perhaps, have a reddened cheek when teeth are erupting through the gums. They may also be irritable and cranky, but teething does not cause a rise in temperature or a convulsion, as these are usually associated with infection.

It may be that the child has an infection while teething and then the infection can be overlooked. The judgment to decide when a child is really sick or not is something which takes a doctor some time to acquire. And so it is with parents, too.

If the child is feverish and irritable then it is more likely to be due to an infection rather than teething. But most simple infections may well have passed by the next day, or be so mild as to not require attention. Paracetamol is safe for small children and will both relieve pain and reduce a fever.
