VENEREAL DISEASE – CONDOM
posted by admin in General healthThe condom, while not so effective as a contraceptive, is certainly a good means of avoiding the spread of V.D.
We no longer tend to use this term, but prefer to speak of the sexually transmitted diseases. The varieties of sexual contact, both heterosexual and homosexual, mean that infection can involve not only the genitals but also other areas such as the throat and rectum.
Male homosexual practice tends to be mainly promiscuous and so there is a high incidence of both syphilis and gonorrhoea in this group,, while these diseases are uncommon among lesbians.
Syphilis is probably still the most feared but with modern treatment the late stages of this disorder, which were once so common, are now rarely seen.
It is believed it was unknown in Europe until the 15th century, when Columbus’ men brought it back from the New World to the Old.
